Mobile TV: MTNL To Launch On April 1, Report Projects $360 Million Market Worth In 2008 .
......................................................... ( Edition March 12, 2008 ) http://www.contentsutra.com
A recent report by Springboard Research predicts India’s mobile tv penetration will reach 12 million within the first year of launch and India’s mobile TV market to reach $360 million in 2008.
According to this BS article, 84 per cent of mobile phone users are interested in using Mobile TV provided the service is commonly available and affordable. Close to 60 per cent of these will prefer watching the same content they get on TV.
First, 12 million is an unrealistic figure in the first year. The report bends rationale by pointing to the DD mobile tv testing, which has been exactly that, just a test with paltry consumption. Regardless, that is the only instance of DVB-H in the country currently, all other deployments are by Telcos, which stream video over GPRS, which is both clunky and having seen the numbers, limited in scope.
Lastly, I don’t know what they are thinking, but $380 million in 2008 means they have to stop smoking whatever they are.
MTNL has announced the launch of its Mobile TV service, at Rs 99 per month a bouquet of 12 channels will be offered. According to this Telegraph report, Zoom, NDTV and CNBC will be part of the service, scheduled to launch on April 1 ( no pun intended)
